Everybody should follow up on the findings of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas Ham) concerning the mysterious killings, known in Indonesian as 'petrus,' that occurred between 1982 and 1985, especially since Komnas Ham has said they constitute gross violations of human rights. The need to support the legal process is even greater because according to the commission, the mysterious shootings involved systematic actions by elements of state security, such as soldiers and police officers.
The methods they used included kidnapping, torture and murder. It is believed all this happened on the orders of the Operation to Restore Security and Order commander, Admiral Sudomo, under the command and control of President Suharto. Civilian officers provided lists of names of people who were then targeted by military officers. In other words, the state instigated this terror.
