  • Friends of Indonesia

Indonesia can never claim to be short of friends. From faraway lands they come, eager to contribute their ideas, energy and personal funds to improve the lives of marginalized communities, protect the environment, empower people and preserve culture. Quite a few, for practical or other reasons, become Indonesian citizens, while retaining their original identities.

No formal records exist of these many extraordinary men and women who devote their time and resources carrying out exemplary projects in various parts of the archipelago. They prefer to do their thing quietly and unassumedly, expecting nothing more than to see their work appreciated by the local people they work with. And while they are rarely reported by the media, we do hear of them, from appreciative villagers and even from a few local government officials In celebration of International Friendship Day on July 30, Tempo English pays tribute to six individuals among many whom we are unable to feature all at once who have committed themselves to improving the lives of Indonesians in Sumatra, Bali, Kalimantan, Sumba and Maluku.

  • Erik Meijaard, Conservation Scientist:

As the 'earth's lungs' or 'land of orangutans' with its rich wildlife, Indonesia has devoted little effort into studying conservation. In 2008, one Dutch conservation scientist was awarded the Victor E. Shelford Award for promoting conservation science in Indonesia.
  • Irfan Kortschak, Writer:
"I'm not driven by the desire to make the world a better place, I just think people have interesting stories to tell."

He toured the remotest part of Indonesia to meet the "invisible people," those who miss out on the village development process. His observation was then recorded into a book.
  • Rob Sangkle, Marine Ecologist:
"We want to nurture awareness of coral reef conservation from an early age."

Rob Sangkle fell in love with Indonesia while vacationing in Bali in 1989. Today, thanks to his hard work, coral reefs in Bitung, North Sulawesi, and in Sawai Itepo, Central Halmahera, have begun to show signs of recovering.
  • Susan Allen, Educator:
    Implementing art for social empowerment

Originally from Canada, Susan Allen uses modern shadow puppet plays to help the children of expatriates adjust to Balinese culture.
  • Andre Graff, Community Development Activist:
"Solar power means no fuel, no corruption, no pollution."

This former hot air balloon businessman used his personal funds to help the people of Sumba gain access to clean water.
