FOR centuries, Balinese farmers have self-governed the irrigation of the landscape, using water to efficiently grow rice in the paddy fields. The farmer's work with the subak as well as the water temples scattered around the island reflects the Balinese principle, Tri Hita Karana, or the three causes of goodness. This promotes the relationship between the individual and the realms of the spirit, the human world and nature. For over a thousand years, the water temples have drawn inspiration from several religious traditions including Saivasiddhanta and Samkhya Hinduism, Vajrayana Buddhism and Austronesian cosmology. The Balinese's connection with the subaks has helped with the growth of food production and the prosperity of their island.
